Wildfires, as a force of nature, present immense challenges to those who try to contain or control them. For a wildland firefighter on the frontlines, it’s an exhilarating and deeply rewarding vocation. The job’s intense physical demands and the camaraderie among firefighters make the wildland firefighter experience truly unique.
A Journey Through the Flames
Before I began my journey in graphic design and metalsmithing, I spent six seasons as a wildland firefighter. I worked two seasons on an engine crew in Minnesota and four seasons on a helitack crew in Colorado. Those years showed me the raw power and beauty of nature. I also witnessed the incredible dedication of my fellow firefighters. Wildland firefighters are a unique breed. We face relentless fires, battling to corral and tame them. The job demands physical strength, mental fortitude, and unwavering teamwork. There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush when up against a raging fire. Knowing that your actions can make a difference is an incredible feeling.
From Firefighting to Artistry
These experiences etched themselves into my soul and became the inspiration for my art. One of my creations, “Helitack,” depicted in the above photo, showcases the incredible work of first responders. I used the meticulous art of acid etching on copper to capture a helitack wildland firefighting crew in action.
The Artistic Process
The artwork’s background features a blazing wood round, symbolizing the intensity of the fires we combat. I aged and weathered the hand-cut copper with care to achieve an authentic look. The flames at the top gleam with a polished, dramatic contrast. Fire also touched the wood log holding the artwork. This gives it the appearance and faint essence of being plucked from the fireline itself. It serves as a reminder of the environments we faced and the indomitable spirit that carried us through.

As I delve into the world of artistry, I carry the memories and experiences of those seasons as a wildland firefighter. My journey from the fireline to the workshop allows me to express the courage, resilience, and unity that define the firefighting community.
