What Wildland Firefighting Taught Me About Annealing Copper

Before I ever worked at a jewelry bench, I learned to read how heat behaves as a wildland firefighter.

On the fire line, you are never just watching the flame in front of you. You are watching what is happening uphill, downwind, and off to the sides. Fire does not stay put. Heat transfers, builds, and affects everything around it. If you focus on only one spot, you miss what matters most.

That lesson follows me every time I anneal metal.

Fire Behavior and Heat Transfer

In wildland fire, we learn about three ways heat moves: conduction, convection, and radiation. All three are always at work, and the same is true at the jewelry bench.

• Conduction is heat moving through direct contact. Metal touching metal, or metal sitting on a hot surface, will pass heat between them.

• Convection is heat carried by moving air. As air heats up, it rises and circulates, bringing heat along with it.

• Radiation is heat traveling in straight lines from a heat source, like the flame from your torch to the metal.

When annealing, it is easy to think the flame is doing all the work. But once you start heating metal, that heat does not stay isolated to the exact spot where the torch is aimed. It spreads.

Annealing Multiple Copper Pieces

When I anneal several pieces at once, I have to pay attention to all of them, not just the one under the flame.

Metal is a good conductor of heat. Pieces sitting close together, touching, or sharing the same soldering block can transfer heat from one to another. A piece next to the one you are actively heating may be getting just as hot, even if the flame never touches it.

That is conductive heat at work. You can actually see this happen in real time when nearby pieces begin to glow again, even without direct flame.

Heat spreads beyond the flame. The torch is aimed at the middle row, but the top row pieces begin to glow again. Because they were already hot, they reheat quickly from the surrounding radiant heat.

At the same time, the air around the pieces is heating up and moving. That warm air circulates around the group, helping raise the overall temperature. This is convective heat, and it speeds things up more than many people realize.

Just like fire moving through a landscape, heat at the bench is influenced by proximity, spacing, and environment.

Watching the Whole Group

One of the biggest habits I carried over from firefighting is situational awareness.

On a fire line, you do not stare at one flame. You scan constantly. You look for changes. You notice what is heating up faster than expected.

At the bench, that means watching:

  • The color of every piece, not just the one under the flame

  • Edges and thinner sections that may heat faster

  • Pieces touching or tucked close together

If one piece reaches annealing temperature, there is a good chance its neighbor is close behind.

How This Changes How I Anneal

Because of this, I work differently when annealing multiple pieces.

I use a broader flame and keep it moving. I avoid stacking pieces unless I intend for them to share heat. I pull the heat sooner than I would if I were annealing a single piece.

Most importantly, I do not fixate on one piece. I treat the group like a small heat system.

Fire Lessons at the Jewelry Bench

Fire teaches you respect for heat. It also teaches you that heat rarely behaves in isolation.

Annealing works the same way.

When you understand that heat is transferring through metal, air, and surfaces all at once, annealing multiple pieces becomes more predictable. You stop chasing color on one piece and start reading the entire setup.

For me, annealing is not just a technical step. It is another place where past experience shows up in unexpected ways. Fire taught me to watch the whole picture, and that awareness carries straight through to my work at the bench.
